Solar Screens are a type of exterior window screen - like the bug screens you may already have - that use a different stitching and type of fabric that reduces the amount of Ultraviolet and Infrared light that passes through your windows. This reduces the amount of heat gain in your home, helping you stay cool, reduce AC usage, and saving on your electric and energy bills.
Solar Screens are one of the best bang-for-your-buck projects to improve the energy efficiency, comfort of your home without the major investment and hassle of new windows, solar panels, central AC units, and similar home projects.
What is a Solar Screen? Are they worth it?
How are they installed? What do they cost?
Depending on the type of windows you have, we can install them into your current screens, create new screen frames that insert into your window casing, or make and mount a frame that fits over or into windows.
We work with you every step of the way to design, prioritize, and install your Solar Screens. We price based on three factors - amount of fabric used, type of fabric used (80%, 90%, 95% blocking), and the complexity or simplicity of installing the screen frames.
We will provide and no-obligation quote after a window measurement and evaluation of the best way to install the screens.
How much energy would I save? Why not just use curtains or blinds?
How much energy you would save depends on a few factors.
Curtains are great for daytime privacy, cooling and darkening the room - but Solar Screens prevent most of the heat your curtains absorb from ever entering your home in the first place - resulting in greater energy savings. Solar Screens also allow Visible light to come in, so when you want the view and not the heat, Solar Screens are a better choice than curtains.
The specific Solar Screen fabric you choose - 80% block, 90% block, or 95% block.
The orientation and type of your windows. Putting 95% block a solar screen on old, single pane, south and west facing windows has a greater impact on energy savings than 80% block on new, double pane, North and East facing windows.
One customer reduced central AC runtime by ~20% and average living room high temperature by 4 degrees fahrenheit by installing 80% blocking solar shades on 5 West facing windows - without changing thermostat settings in the middle of Summer with temps over 100* every day.
